Cut! (7 Comments)

Filed under: Photos,Yard and Garden — The Spider Herself @ 3:38 pm

We have 5 acres. When we first bought it people asked us if we were going to get horses, which is what people around here do with their property. We said “No.” Cows then? We shake our heads and ignore the looks we get. I mean, what else would a person DO with property? Just enjoying the space isn’t good enough. Well, in some ways it isn’t. For one reason the weeds take over and they are just awful to live with- so pushy and not at all friendly. The previous owners had put in pasture grass for hay. We found a local farmer who would care for our measly four acres of grass and now we sit back and watch the show. What’s more exciting than watching grass grow? Watching the swather, tractor, rake and baler go around the field for one.

Here is a blast from the past (2004) when we ate lunch outside so we could better watch the baler. Notice The Boy’s shirt- it’s the same one that his sister wears all the time.

Last year our hay was cut for the first time on May 14th, which was early. Usually it’s cut towards the end of May or early June. This year?

It was cut yesterday. And yes, those are gray clouds up in the sky. But it hasn’t rained… so far. Today is clear and sunny with a slight breeze. Good haying weather.

Watch out! Don’t get run over!

  1. So I could find your driveway easier now? And to think I missed the show only by merely a few days. Your family is very fortunate to have those few acres just to sit, watch, and enjoy. Many want….few have.

  2. So are you actually making money off of this hay venture? If it were me I would have planted lots of trees and made a huge wildflower meadow so I could sit back and watch the birds and the bees!

  3. I like Liesel’s idea! A wooded wildflower area would be beautiful. Then you couldn’t see any neighbors and that’s even better yet! I would bet the kids would enjoy playing in it too.

  4. Yes, we make a little bit. Nothing to get very excited about but you know every little bit helps! Plus we get a farm deferral on the property taxes. 🙂 I like seeing the land being productive.

Last year we did plant more trees around the house area but it’s hard to see them in the photos as they aren’t very big yet. This isn’t the Wet Side so it’s a lot harder to grow things! The Col. dreams of more landscaping etc. but at this point in our lives we are just trying to keep on top of the regular maintenance. Besides, one reason we like it here is that we can see out. The kids get the experience the whole forest effect when we go visit the Grandparents.

Although The Boy would love more trees to climb and build tree forts in.

  5. Somebody’s Boy would like a combine ride. I see it in his grin.

I bet I know some combine drivers who would let him drive, too.

  6. Yes, he would like that but his parents would go bankrupt driving him to those combines.

I thought they liked straight swathes and I doubt his would be- I’ve seen him drive before!

  7. […] discussion came up here recently about trees- see the comments on this post. Since these things all tend to run together in my mind- wait, what mind? It got me thinking about […]
